Morning rush hour, traffic reduced to single lane serving both directions, no traffic queues. Here only SIX cars are waiting as the lights change. This road is grossly oversized for the traffic using it where it splits into dual … [more]
Baldock Rd in Letchworth (formerly the A505) is an urban two lane single carriageway for all but a short stretch outside the retail park. Plenty of roadside activity here - driveways and properties fronting straight onto it.
Paynes Park might feel like an out of town ring road but in fact it is only 100m from the High Street. It is the inappropriate road conditions that create the hostile environment. Take away the traffic and the one way system, develop … [more]
This pavement is too narrow for successful shared use. The usable width is reduced further by the many road signs and other street furniture that are located in the path. Here the effective (ie usable) width is only 1m - too narrow for a … [more]
Elmside Walk leads to an attractive path up to the swimming pool (indoor pool and a fantastic open air lido in summer). Also links to the residential streets of Bearton.
Most people prefer to ride in the road than on the pavement unless they are forced to do otherwise. Even here on Bedford Road where conditions are pretty hostile. If this footway is to be converted to shared use it should be taken into the … [more]
Brand Street is one of Hitchin's main shopping streets. The 1999 Hitchin Transport Plan called for the traffic restricted zone to be extended to cover Brand Street (maintaining access for cycles and public transport).
A cycle link can easily be created through to the preferred location of the toucan crossing #16579 here. This allows a simple connection without creating conflict with pedestrians.
This is where the toucan crossing needs to be positioned. Ideally a link should be created heading straight through the car parking area behind the planting opposite. See also #16574. Even if this link is not created, this crossing … [more]
HCC's proposal is to convert this footway to shared use and then have a toucan crossing over to a pavement cycleway on the east side. This pinch point restricts both physical width and visibility. It is not suitable for shared use and is … [more]
This access ramp is fine for pedestrians but is too tight for cycle access and makes conflict with pedestrians likely. the turn at the bottom of the ramp to reach the proposed toucan location is much too tight and then leads to a 2m wide … [more]
The existing access ramp is quite confined. There is greater likelihood of conflict if this is used for cycle access than if a new link is created through the adjacent parking area see #16574. HCC's proposed crossing position means that … [more]
Cyclists need to be able to cross between the proposed cycle route along Bedford Road (opposite) and Oughten Head Way (behind) or to continue up Bedford Road to the left. People should not have to stop and give way more than ONCE to cross … [more]
Ashwell is a pretty village full of timber framed houses. It has an impressive church, great pubs, an interesting little museum, and the source of the Cam (at Ashwell Springs). Take care on the High Street though, it is reduced to single … [more]
The Three Tuns Hotel. One of Ashwell's three excellent pubs, with a large beer garden and excellent food.
Ashwell springs, source of the river Cam (or Rhee as it is known here). A beautiful spot for a paddle and a picnic. Home to rare nematodes and wild watercress.
Baldock High Street during morning peak on a weekday BEFORE the bypass was built. Doesn't look very busy does it ? Doesn't look much different to today really ! Was that £33 million, plus another £2.4 million for resurfacing the "car … [more]
The Twitchell links through the recreation ground to the Tene path, forming a parallel route to the High Street.
The path connecting the Tene to the Twitchell / Simpson Drive needs little action other than to replace the barriers in the distance with ride through bollards.
This path comes out directly opposide Icknield Way East. In the opposite direction it lines up with a green corridor linking to Hartfield school and through the centre of Clothall estate.
All cul de sacs should be permeable on foot and by bike. Make travel by bike easy, painless and quick and there is a greater likelihood that people will cycle rather than driving. Remove all barriers, ensure all crossovers have dropped … [more]
This path could be converted to shared use, by removing the barriers to cycle access and dropping the kerb to join South Road. It is narrow but visibility is good as the path is straight. Link path to the end of South Close for a better … [more]

Icknield Way East is a quiet road giving access to the station from Clothall Estate. NHDC route 1 HIGH priority Barriers need to be made more suitable for cycle passage. A link needs to be made into the Clothall Estate across Royston … [more]
Ickneild Way East is a quiet road giving access to the station from Clothall Estate. NHDC route 1 HIGH priority
This path is a useful link although rather too narrow for shared use. This is compensated for somewhat by the short length. The dropped kerb in the foreground must be made truly flush. Good vegetation control is essential to make the best … [more]
This path has poor width and visibility. It is not suitable for shared use and the benefits of converting it are questionable. Making Royston Road more cycle friendly, and developing HCC Links 7 and 8 would be a better use of resources.

This passage becomes unsuitably narrow for shared use ahead. Retain barriers and keep as footpath only.
New path needed to link with the Tene path (left) and into the end of The Twitchell and Thurnall close. Keep path away from the boundary to ensure good visibility. Cycle parking needed for recreation ground.
Baldock-Letchworth Route 4 The existing bridleway has a reasonably firm surface but needs to be sealed for utility cycling. Drainage required at the A1(M) subway.

Baldock-Letchworth Route 4 The planned new path continues parallel to the former A505, along the field boundary, to the leisure centre (visible at the far end of the field).

The path from Coachmans Lane suffers from vandalism. The fence on the right was kicked down. It is better if this fence is not re-instated, allowing much better surveillance by residents to guard against antisocial behaviour.
5 lanes merge to 2. If you only need 2 lanes here, then why do we need 5 lanes 200m further on ? There are much better uses for the road space.
The path up Pepys Way is an excellent link through to the bridge over the A1, leading to Works Rd and Letchworth town centre. It needs a sealed surface and the closure at the far end needs to be made cycle friendly
This lane will form the approach to the new rail underpass. The rail line is visible in the distance. The number of cars parked is not typical, this photo was taken on a "show" weekend.
You cannot go anywhere from this corner of the A10 gyratory. King Street on the left, High St on the right - both no entry. Very cycle un-friendly.
