The Green, Royston. Annoying road closure with no through connection for cycling. There is a bit of tarmac on one side that makes sort of a ramp. Easily fixed, not much money to open this as an alternative route for bikes from the busy … [more]
Very narrow cycle lanes like these force cyclists into the gutter and encourage fast, close overtaking by motor vehicles.

HCC think that this is what a cycle facility looks like. Mind the post that has been left right in the middle of it. This is morning rush hour and look how little traffic there is on the road. It does not need 5 traffic lanes here. It DOES … [more]

Baldock Rd in Letchworth (formerly the A505) is an urban two lane single carriageway for all but a short stretch outside the retail park. Plenty of roadside activity here - driveways and properties fronting straight onto it.
Roadside hedges just don't get maintained. Footways just disappear into the jungle - another reason for NOT putting cyclists on the footway. Royston Rd, Baldock.
Sun St has been thoughtlessly made one way without providing two way cycle access as required by the Hertfordshire Cycling Strategy. See #16743 This is how to fix it: 1. Put in a protective bollard with "cycles left" sign. 2. Put logos … [more]

Sun St and Church St were thoughtlessly made one way without provision for two way cycle access. This is despite the Hertfordshire Cycling Strategy explicitly raising that very issue. It is easily solved - see #16742 for details
Speed cushions are usually one of the more cycle friendly traffic calming methods, however these are a hazard. The cushions leave little gap to the kerb so cyclists are forced into the centre of the road, particularly if towing children on … [more]

Bell Row SHOULD have been closed to motor traffic and a two way cycle track built down it, according to the NHDC cycle route masterplan. This has unaccountably been ignored in the High Street re-build. See #16671 Action needed to rectify … [more]
NHDC cycle route 3 requires Bell Row to be closed to motor traffic at the northern end and a two way cycle route linking the High Street to Church Street. This has unaccountably been ignored in the High Street rebuild. For the solution, … [more]
The solution to the problems created in #16643. Create a cycle bypass through the one way closure, with additional "cycle plugs" at the turn into Sun St and the Sun Street exit into Whitehorse St. Use cycle logos on the carriageway to … [more]
Church Street has been thoughtlessly blocked off and made one way. This makes it impossible to legally cycle through to the High Street by bike from the streets immediately to the north. This is on the planned NHDC cycle route 3. The whole … [more]
Paynes Park might feel like an out of town ring road but in fact it is only 100m from the High Street. It is the inappropriate road conditions that create the hostile environment. Take away the traffic and the one way system, develop … [more]
Paynes Park is a very poor environment despite being so close to the bustling centre of Hitchin. The one way system is partly to blame, creating a hostile, vehicle dominated environment. Paynes Park would also benefit from having more … [more]

Nuns Close needs to have two way cycle access to allow people to avoid the Park Way roundabout. The entry geometry encourages people to drive in fast off the one way system. Action: Re-align the entry so that it is square to Old Park … [more]
Paynes Park is not a very pleasant pedestrian environment. It is completely traffic dominated, leaving the properties in the centre of the "island" isolated. Solution: Restore 2 way traffic flow. This would remove all except local traffic … [more]

Build out on Old Park Road, built 2009, creates a nasty pinch point. Cyclists get squeezed by drivers who are reluctant to pull across into the right hand lane.
The one way restrictions in Old Park Road, and the hostile road conditions, force people to cycle on the pavements.
