There really should be cycle access here.

The Green, Royston. Annoying road closure with no through connection for cycling. There is a bit of tarmac on one side that makes sort of a ramp. Easily fixed, not much money to open this as an alternative route for bikes from the busy … [more]

Very narrow cycle lanes like these force cyclists into the gutter and encourage fast, close overtaking by motor vehicles.

This could be a contraflow cycle route

No reason why these service routes can't be signed as cycle routes.

Hitchin and Letchworth are close, linked by a busy main road with no cycle facilities.

Flooding is a hazard to cyclists, here taking up half the road width.

No way through here. Unwelcome new traffic island outside Baldock rail station. When traffic is flowing it forms a nasty pinch point, when traffic is stationary or stop / start queueing as here it prevents cyclists and motorcyclists from … [more]

Traffic queueing into the far distance on North Rd, Baldock. So much for the bypass !

Junction of Lucas Lane and Station Road. A lady cyclist was killed at this junction when a young driver cut the corner coming from behind the camera and hit her head on. Proposals for improving the junction include adding a splitter … [more]

Visibility as you approach Jubilee Road is very poor. The danger is exacerbated because the wide bellmouth encourages drivers to approach at speed. This is not suitable as a shared use pavement without serious improvement to improve … [more]

HCC think that this is what a cycle facility looks like. Mind the post that has been left right in the middle of it. This is morning rush hour and look how little traffic there is on the road. It does not need 5 traffic lanes here. It DOES … [more]

Morning rush hour, traffic reduced to single lane serving both directions, no traffic queues. This road is grossly oversized for the traffic using it and that just creates problems. There is a pressing need for a good quality cycle link … [more]

Roadside hedges just don't get maintained. Footways just disappear into the jungle - another reason for NOT putting cyclists on the footway. Royston Rd, Baldock.

Sun St has been thoughtlessly made one way without providing two way cycle access as required by the Hertfordshire Cycling Strategy. See #16744 for how to fix it.

Sun St and Church St were thoughtlessly made one way without provision for two way cycle access. This is despite the Hertfordshire Cycling Strategy explicitly raising that very issue. It is easily solved - see #16742 for details

Speed cushions are usually one of the more cycle friendly traffic calming methods, however these are a hazard. The cushions leave little gap to the kerb so cyclists are forced into the centre of the road, particularly if towing children on … [more]

NHDC cycle route 3 requires Bell Row to be closed to motor traffic at the northern end and a two way cycle route linking the High Street to Church Street. This has unaccountably been ignored in the High Street rebuild. For the solution, … [more]

Church Street has been thoughtlessly blocked off and made one way. This makes it impossible to legally cycle through to the High Street by bike from the streets immediately to the north. This is on the planned NHDC cycle route 3. The whole … [more]

Paynes Park is a very poor environment despite being so close to the bustling centre of Hitchin. The one way system is partly to blame, creating a hostile, vehicle dominated environment. Paynes Park would also benefit from having more … [more]

Two way cycle access needed in Nuns Close. There is ample width to provide a cycle plug entry at the Paynes Park end.

Two way cycle access needed in Nuns Close. There is neither need nor benefit in having a seperate cycle lane as this would get abused by car parking. Mark cycle logos in the carriageway to deter beligerence towards people cycling … [more]

Nuns Close needs to have two way cycle access to allow people to avoid the Park Way roundabout. The entry geometry encourages people to drive in fast off the one way system. Action: Re-align the entry so that it is square to Old Park … [more]

Paynes Park is not a very pleasant pedestrian environment. It is completely traffic dominated, leaving the properties in the centre of the "island" isolated. Solution: Restore 2 way traffic flow. This would remove all except local traffic … [more]

This footway is very narrow. In contrast, the roadway has been widened out to create two lanes going north up the Bedford Road and a third lane going back south to the town centre. ACTION: Remove the second queueing lane, create a cycle … [more]

Two lanes or one ? Two stacking lanes before the junction lead to an ambiguous single, wide lane. Drivers jostle for position before reaching the first parked car. ACTION: remove the double stacking lane, it is only two car lengths long … [more]

Oughton Head Way needs an advanced stop line with a short lead in lane. NHDC route 6

Brand Street junction with Paynes Park. A grim and unwelcoming environment that contrats starkly with the bustling shopping streets only a short walk away. It needs: - Restoration of two way flow - Closure of Brand St to private motor … [more]

The entrance to Grammar School walk is unnecessarily widely flared. It encourages people to drive in and out too fast and makes it more difficult for pedestrians to cross. Minimise the width and kerb radius (as recommended in Manual for … [more]

Cars come racing off the Bedford Road section of the gyratory, straight into Brand Street with nothing to slow them down. This junction needs re-arranging, to introduce deflection and slow cars down to a speed more appropriate for a … [more]

The one way system forces people to choose. You either take a long detour round Paynes Park and Old Park Road, taking in the delights of the Park Drive roundabout on route, or you ride along the pavement. Not surprisingly many people … [more]

Build out on Old Park Road, built 2009, creates a nasty pinch point. Cyclists get squeezed by drivers who are reluctant to pull across into the right hand lane.

The one way restrictions in Old Park Road, and the hostile road conditions, force people to cycle on the pavements.

Traffic queueing into the far distance on North Rd, Baldock. So much for the bypass !

Did somebody say that we have spent £33 million on a bypass to get the traffic queues out of Baldock ? It doesn't seem to have worked ! Traffic on North Rd actually increased by 30% in the year following opening of the bypass. Queues are … [more]

Wallington Road is unnecessarily wide and lacks direct activity fronting onto it. This encourages fast driving. Reduce the apparent width of the road by putting cycle lanes on either side and removing the centerline. Care needs to be … [more]

Restore Pinnocks Lane to two way flow. Alternatively, create a cycle plug at the west end so that this end ONLY is one way for motor traffic, with two way cycling maintained. OR close the western end to motor traffic completely, … [more]

South Road is a thoroughly unpleasant rat run. One of the worst roads in Baldock for cycling. Narrow parking bays, critical width traffic lanes make cycling very intimidating.

With reduced traffic levels on Royston Road following opening of the bypass, efforts should be made to make it more cycle friendly. (Cycle friendly) traffic calming, centerline removal, and introduction of cycle lanes are all appropriate … [more]

Pinnocks Lane is wide enough for 2 way flow. It should be restored to two way traffic as the current one way arrangement creates a serious barrier to the only cross town link between the High St and Clothall Rd. At the very least a cycle … [more]

A horrible build out opposite Rosia school. This is very intimidating for cyclists as cars try to barge their way through as you negotiate the gap. The need to make the crossing safer is obvious but there are much better ways to do it: 1. … [more]

This car has plenty of space to its right and yet it is ecroaching into a cycle lane that is already far too narrow - less than half the recommended (2.0m) width. The red car coming the other way is also encroaching on that cycle lane. … [more]

The cycle lanes in North Rd are downright dangerous. They are far too narrow - at 850 mm here they are less tha half the recommended width (2.0m) and yet traffic STILL encroaches on them. The reason for the encroachment is a large island … [more]

London Road A10. Not a pleasant road to cycle on but impossible to avoid because of the one way system. This is a serious deterrent to cycling. The whole one way system needs to be reviewed and restored to two way working.
